The smell of morning hits me at 5:35 AM. It floats down the hall from my teenager's bedroom, taps me on the shoulder and says, "Get up and make him breakfast, for crying out loud."
"It" is Tag, Midnight - to be exact. It is as essential to a young man's wardrobe as his pants are. Maybe even more essential. It is applied, right after showering, in such a dose that you can smell it through the entire house. In fact, sometimes I can even smell it in the garage. It's not really that bad when you consider the alternative armpit/tennis shoe smell.
When Tag goes on sale we buy in bulk. Usually the Midnight scent is the first to go at Walmart (always the best price at Walmart - Walmart shoppers wear Tag) so whenever we see it, we grab a can. I don't mind doing this, considering the alternative. Sometimes, after the kids are gone to school I wander into their rooms, tidying up (like twice a year) and catch that scent and smile. When I was their age the perfume of choice was "Wild Musk" if you were a make-out, or "Love's Baby Soft", if you were sweet and innocent. (I wore Sweet Honesty - by Avon.)
I know why they wear the scent. They want to be liked. A lot. By girls. They have seen this ad. They have never actually seen a girl at their school act like these aggressive little tarts. But, you never know. It could happen.

At my house it was Axe until I bought them the more expensive Michael Jordan or Adidas version for Christmas or birthdays. I miss the boy smell. Jordan smelled like a sweaty baseball cap. Sigh...I better go smell his baseball cap.
I'm impressed that you make him breakfast, I figure my kids have two arms and know where the cereal is kept. You're a better mom!
I'd have a hard time buying Tag or Axe for my kids based on the commercials alone!
Actually, I hate most men's cologne commercials except old spice hair and bodywash. Love that commercial.

Oh, the girls at my high school acted exactly like the commercials. All the time. Even during class. I thought they acted like that every where! ;) Tell that to your boys... then maybe they'll want to come out to California and I'll be able to see you guys sometime!
When I walk past teenage boys that smell good, I always want to take a step back towards them and inhale deeply. I love it. Just not it constant or huge doses.
But I try to avoid sniffing the teenage boys.
oh to be in high school again. the good old days. (can i say that, the good old days, i mean i'm only 30)? ya whatever i'm getting old.
For me is was Debbie Gibson's Xclamation! Wow, that was a long time ago.
Like above - I also wore Xclamation!! I remember the smell of boys cologne - I think the one I liked was called Stillwater. I also liked the Tommy Cologne. FUNNY!
This is a good post. cK1 was my favorite. Funny!
i love it! what a good mom you are!
WOnderful Post Robin! Don't smells take us back. I bet everyone of your commenters thought of a memory connected to a perfume or cologne. I wore Anne Klein. It was flowery and I was in my flowery phase. I also loved Lauren by Ralph.
I can't smell Mens Obsession without my stomach doing a complete flip.
Maybe we (dave and I) should start smelling good again.... We've gone without for all these baby years. I hate a baby smelling anything other than baby lotion.
I wore Musk... does that mean I was a slut? I still wear CK1 during the summer months... it has a fresh, light citrus smell.... jeez, I sound like a commercial.

HILLARIOUS ad! I remember when my brothers would smell up our house with their Axe or whatever. My days are coming of having that in my house!
I totally remember Love's Baby Soft and Sweet Honesty. My signature scent was Ysatis in high school and I still buy a big bottle every once in a while when I want to feel youthful.
My husband's sexy high school girlfriend must have worn Obsession because he always buys it for me. I think it smells like smut.
Maybe I'll buy some for Alan this Xmas. On second thought, if the ad is what can happen to him maybe I won't.
Thanks for the update - but I have to tell you it makes me miss you more!! Boise had the whitest Christmas - which you probably already heard and we had an awesome christmas - chad and corey arrived on the 23rd - just in time for the Boise State game - after a 7 1/2 hour drive by closed roads and piles of snow! we had a fantabulous time together - only thing would have been better if the smiths would have been here to play with!!! Love you guys - Ann
