Math? or HSM?

Today in Algebra my 6th grader will be watching HSM. Poor Ike probably wishes he hadn't mentioned it.

I have been on a rant since last night about how ridiculous it is to show movies, especially like this one, in math! Ike complained about how he would rather go outside and play football. I bet there isn't one kid who hasn't seen this show and most of the girls have it memorized.

If I were a teacher and needed a babysitter (heaven forbid) for my class I would at least get some artsy foreign film:
  • Children of Heaven
  • Secret of Roan Inish
  • Rabbit Proof Fence
  • Whale Rider
  • Cave of the Yellow Dog
  • The Red Balloon (especially for young children, no words, no subtitles)
  • I Am David
These are all wonderful shows that few kids get to see and they are all available on NetFlix.com. They are different than Hollywood movies. There isn't a lot of action or special effects, but they show kids in a different culture, coping with the same things our kids cope with.

I just think it is such a waste when you have 12 year olds captive to not give them something new, something unique, something that makes a difference. It makes me want to be a teacher so I can do it right.

I would teach, but I can make more money with what I already do.

Yes. I am annoyed for you. But thanks for the list of new movies!

I have to say I would rather do math than watch High School Musical. In fact, it's been so long since I actually "did math," I think math sounds pretty exciting. In comparison to watching High School Musical. Plus, there are plenty of good math movies out there, like ahhhhhh . . . ummmmmmm . . . Seriously, though, there are. Starting with "Donald in Mathmagic Land," which contains pretty much all the math you will ever need to know and how to apply it. Look it up on YouTube or Wikipedia.

I loved Rabbit Proof Fence. It was so good. I can't believe his class is watching HSM in Math.

Wasn't Good Will Hunting about math? I mean, it had a billion F words in it so it would have to be edited (and about 8 minutes long).

I totally agree with you, Robin. And your list of movies is great, and I'm proud to say that my kids have seen some of them already.

What a waste of time! What does H.S. Musical have to do with math?

That is a waste of time and eager young brain cells.

yeah, I'm with Sally. GWH or what about Rainman - it had math kinda, or Ocean's Eleven - math, pretty much any poker movie will have some math.

Joe, I'm too lazy to look up Donald in Mathmagic Land. Yeah, I'm really that lazy. Please provide a link.

Oh, and Joe, is that avatar a picture of Cortez? He was a pretty violent dude. He burned his own ships so his men couldn't retreat, then he destroyed, decimated really Tenochtitlan. Not a good guy.

At least they should show a math movie, like that chess one. Unacceptable. i hope you called the principal.

Hey, maybe they were counting the number of sequins, or the number of times Troy grins/swoons at the camera, or the number of dance steps done on the basketball court. There is plenty to be learned from HSM! It is highly educational! No, I'm just kidding, but don't you remember watching Grease while your teacher graded papers in science in Jr High? At least HSM isn't a convoluted attempt at teaching sex ed... But you're right, I am David would be better! Love that movie!

Yet another vote for homeshool, charter schools & taking kids out of school for a day or a week or a month. Sooo much wasted time. I hope you voiced your opinion to the teacher and to the administration. If not, please do. Print a copy for the teacher of this blog & the comment responses to it.

If any of you have the opportunity to see the movie "Flunked," don't miss it. Here is a trailer for it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPDOPF2IY5g
or
go to my blog to see it.

Eww. Gross. Why. I vote to remove the teacher and replace her with someone who has some taste.

Oh wow! HSM is so totally awesome. I can't think of a better way for my child to spend their time at school.

Holy cow, serious, what is the teacher thinking?

I remember a Econ/Gvmt teacher in H.S. showing a film about fires in high rise buildings and learned all about how to protect myself (take duct tape in suitcase to seal the doors and wet towels and put at base of doors) I was scared for months to stay in an upper floor of a hotel after that! (forgot my duct tape)
