I am embarrassed to admit this, but before we moved here I had a negative opinion of the military. That opinion was fed mostly by the media who portrays the military as uneducated, harsh, men who enjoy inflicting pain. How very wrong that is. I am surrounded by men and women who are leaders in the military. Our bishopric is made up entirely of retired officers and the YW secretary is a Lieutenant Colonel. They are honest, generous, faithful, intelligent, hard working, warm loving people. I have never had better neighbors than those we have now.
I have a good friend whose husband has been in
Right after we moved here we were at a party and I asked a handsome guy what he did and he casually said:
"I work at Space Command."
I was amazed and immediately asked, "Wow! What do you do there!?"
"Sorry, I can't tell you." he said, with a smile.
That has happened several times and I still get a little James Bond thrill from it. Infact, if they don't say "Space Command" I feel a little disappointed.
These people have shared experiences with me, both good and bad, about the war. Nearly everyday there is a front page personal story about the war. Most of the time they are obituaries and I am compelled to read every word. The media here handles the war in a patriotic supportive way, but they don't shield us from the gory details. They also do a much better job of sharing the good stuff that is happening in
Many Americans have disconnected with the war. They are tired of hearing about it and it is so very far away, it hardly affects the daily life of most Americans – besides, there is the tragedy of Britney Spears to think about.
Do you have a family member there? Have you been asked to grow a victory garden? Or give up all your medal so they can melt it down for ammunition? If every American could experience living here during war time, having friends and neighbors who are affected by it as mine are, there wouldn’t be such a disconnect.
I am sure I wouldn’t have this opinion if we still lived in

Here in CA I hear about the war occasionally, mostly when there has been a roadside/IED explosion with American casualties. It is rarely on the front page. You are right, Americans at large are disconnected from the war. I think most Americans feel bad about the war--we don't want it, we want it to end, it makes us feel really sad and helpless when we think about it at length, but most of us don't think about it at length.
One of my YSA father is also a doctor who has been to Iraq 4 times and is going back this spring.
I really liked your "Space Command" comment--I, vicariously, feel thrilled. ;-)

Have you ever watched Stargate Atlantis? Total geek show, but they always are showing NORAD and I think about you guys.
What a different experience you guys are having living there! When we lived there we got to know a lot of military families and I gained a whole new respect for what they do.
Sally - I never thought about it until we moved here. i was completely disconnected.
Jolly - I like your name.
Melissa - Respect is the perfect word for what I feel for these people. I respect them so much. I appreciate them even more.
Well put, Robin. I went to the servicemen's ward when I lived in Berlin when I was 16 - nearly everyone there was in the armed services. Perhaps part of it was due to the fact that I so badly wanted to connect with others, but I still look back at that ward as the most generous and thoughtful people in the world. When I think of those who where somewhat distant I now realize they were the civilians unconnected with the armed services.
The servicemen I knew in Colorado Springs were no different - cream of the crop and deeply devoted to serving and protecting our country.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS - LET THEM WIN!
I completely agree. I feel more connected to the war knowing people and talking to people who are daily affected. I wish the media would spend their time supporting the troops instead of bashing the war. Well said-
Not only do we have the Britney tradegy to think about, but what about Brad and Angelina? I mean we've got to think about their wedding and this baby they're having together and what about Jennifer Aniston, how does she feel about all this? Does anyone ask her? After all, Angelina is a saint because she has a billion dollars and decides to adopt a baby or two from a third world country...Yes, I have issues about this! Why is this crap posted on the front page every month while real life is going on around us?
Argh! Let your friends know we are grateful for them. And btw, will you say hi to Buzz Lightyear for me? Thanks.
