Stevia

I forgot to sunscreen my arms. I spent the day in the garden and now I have a slight sunburn on my arms. But it was worth it to get all my flowerpots planted, tidy up the perennial beds and transplant some stuff. The perennials I planted 2 years ago are much larger, I didn't expect them to grow so well. Now I can transplant them and spread them around a little. Ice plant, sedum (all varieties), and Ladies Mantle do especially well. In a few years I could have a lovely garden/yard.

My neighbor's dandelions are starting to move into my yard. Normally that would make me grumble, but after a sunny day in the garden nothing can make me grumble.I planted Stevia. It is an herb that is 100-600 time more sweet than sugar (depending on the variety, climate and such). They say 1 tablespoon equals a cup of sugar, but no calories. If you drop by I will give you a leaf to chew on. Laurel and Caden each ate a leaf today but I'm not sure they LOVED it. Noah loves it. I am afraid that Noah will eat it all before it gets a chance to grow. I found it at Lowe's of all places (my least favorite place to buy plants!).

I had stevia growing in my garden a few years ago and it lasted a few years because it didn't winter kill.
I made stevia lemonade and stevia tea with the leaves. Both were pretty good, but not great.

Fred Meyer is my favorite place for plants. & of course Edwards Green House down the street.

My yard could use a little TLC. Want to come over? I need some raised flower beds so I can garden again. The bending makes me faint. Once my neighbor found me passed out in the front yard. I was pulling weeds. It makes me sad. I love getting my hands in the dirt. C'est la vie.

Well, I've never heard of Stevia before... how interesting. Would love to taste it sometime.

I ordered a bucket of stevioside about 7 years ago. It's basically stevia without all the non-sweetening parts of the leaf. Anyway, wow ... that bucket should last me the rest of my life. I use it with my cranberry drinks - dilute cranberry lite 2:1 with water, add a pinch of stevioside and some other stuff ... it's delicious.

Anyway, Stevia has a bit of a licorice taste to it - some like that, I do (Melissa doesn't). Steviocide (what I have) is a pure sweetener without the licorice taste. Bottom line, if you like licorice you'll like stevia leaves - makes a great tea. If you don't, try the steviocide. As a sweetener it's kinda funny ... has a lasting affect, doesn't really satisfy the front of your tongue like real sugar does but stays with you.

Robin -
I have to say that I think of you every time I work in my yard. Years ago you gave my mom some Solomn seal and then this spring she gave me some. It has been my funnest plant so far! I have pictures of it on my blog because I was so amazed at how fast it grew!

Nice to meet ya Robin...thanks for stopping by and introducing yourself. You have a GORGEOUS family as well-looks like you're going thru the teenage years too!

Stevia reminds me of dieting, which I sorely need to get back to. Sigh.
