I volunteered to work at High School registration yesterday - the day the juniors registered. Here are a few Do's and Dont's for the parents:
Dont's
Don't go to registration with your teenager.
Don't answer questions directed to your teenager.
Don't curse at your teenager for losing his science text book last year ($75).
Don't send your teenager to registration without money for the fees (average was $175).
Don't gripe about the registration fee. You had the sex, then the baby. Pay for it.
Do's
Do encourage your teenager to find a locker mate BEFORE registration.
Do let your teenager do this alone.
A Few Statistics According to Robin:
1/3 of the students bought pictures ($45)
1/4 of the students bought yearbooks ($65)
1/5 of the students bought parking passes ($40)
1/6 of the students bought activity passes ($40)
ALL of the students (except 2 that were grounded) had the permission slip to leave campus at lunch.
Most of the kids were well dressed.

Really interesting stats. I am surprised at the activity pass (is this what gets you into football games, etc.?) And the yearbook! I thought everybody bought a year book. (at least for HS. I don't buy the elementary school yearbook.
I ditto Melissa, and you have to pay for activity passes? This is a great way to encourage teenagers to stay out of trouble--make them pay to stay out of trouble. Want to go to the football game instead of the drinking party? Well, you're gonna hafta pay.
"Don't curse at your teenager for losing his science text book last year ($75)."
That made me laugh. At first I thought, "Oh yeah, don't curse at your teenager!" then I thought, "I'd be pretty ticked about it too...not that I'd curse, but I can see how a parent might..." ;-) Instead of cursing, pinch really hard.
Remind me to home school...I won't, but remind me to.
$75 for a science book? Such a deal!
Oh wait, this is a high school book.... nevermind.
Interesting to see it from a volunteer perspective.
We got off a little cheaper, and for a brand spanking new school! Act card ($35) Year book ($52) Class dues ($5.00) Total fees
($92) Going at the end of registration when there was not only no line, but no other registrants (priceless)!
I will blog about HS and Middle School Reg tomorrow.
I love it. "You had the sex..." Good reminder. No whining!
II registered Porter last Thursday and had your blog memorized!
10:1 I think that's about the rate of inflation since my senior year i1959-60. I think my total costs were about $15.
Now everyone who reads your blog can figure out my age.
and I just don't understand the sex comment. Can someone explain it?
