Little India Wet Market

Today I went with a friend to Little India and the wet market there.
A wet market, in Singapore, is a place to buy produce, meat, fish, spices and such from individual vendors
rather than a supermarket that is owned by a single company.
There are lots of stalls and lots of smells, good and bad. Mostly the bad smells came from the butcher isle.
 Stay away from there!

Can you see the bees on the white flowers? They were very fragrant and drawing in lots of bees.

The spice isle smelled wonderful as did the flower stalls.

It wasn't very crowded when we were there at 11:00 AM and one of the produce vendors told me he
would close up around 3:00. Maybe it is busy in the morning?

These little fruits (you can see my finger in the shot to give perspective) were called
"Rose something or another" I can't think of the name. They are used for tea with lots of sugar, the vendor said.
100 points to whomever can name these.

150 points to the person who knows what this is.
Not tulips.
They were in several produce stalls but the vendors of those stalls wouldn't talk to me.
Just straight up ignored me.
Too bad. I would have spent money if they talked to me.
Lots and lotsa money, baby.

This guy's stall smelled wonderful. Freshly shredded coconut!
The floor around the stall was slippery with coconut oil. He gave us each a little handful of freshly ground coconut for us to sample.
Fresh, creamy, slightly sweet, light and juicy.

Squid. Lots of sizes available for your eating pleasure.

The Little India wet market is especially fun. And feels much more like a wet market than the one
that is just a 10 minute walk from my house.
The fish seems really fresh and there is a huge selection.

Bread fruit? Right? I think this is breadfruit. Emily?

And finally. These beauties. So pretty! And the only ones I saw in the whole market.
Any guess what these are?
Banana flowers! See the baby bananas? super cool and very heavy.

The End.

SO FUN!!!

Along these lines- There's a botanical garden in Singapore that's free and it's open until 11 pm at night- the bathrooms are indoors but outdoors. (Yep, that's what I remember- the bathrooms)

Lovely pictures, I so love the market!
The pink fruit are actually flowers, they are called roselle, they are a type of hibiscus. Try buying them, boil them in water with some sugar, use the liquid as a cool drink, and make the fruit into jam. Jummy! The flowers are called ginger flowers, there are used in some kinds of laksa, also rojak sauce. The fruit is not breadfruit, but jackfruit!
I get a lot of pints ;)
And thank you for your lovely comments on my blog, will have a browse on your too!
