Step One: Make your kids pick the berries. It won't take long.
Step Two: Sort the berries:
Step Three: Follow this recipe:
Serviceberry Pie
3 1/2 cups serviceberries
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon lemon juice
pastry for a two-crust pie
Mix all the above ingredients together except pastry, coating the serviceberries well. Put in 9-inch pie shell and cover with top crust and flute edges. Bake at 375 degrees for 1 hour.
Step Four: Serve with ice cream.
Tips:
- Service Berries are better fresh than cooked.
- Don't skimp on the sugar, cinnamon, or ice cream because service berries are better fresh than cooked.
- They make a beautiful pie with lots of pretty purples. But eat them fresh instead.

Wow! That is a beautiful pie, but I am not surprised by your amazing piemaking skill. Too bad serviceberries are better fresh. :)
Wow, for a second I was all excited that you had that at your house and was about to shove the kids in the car to come get some! That's a step up from anything I make. Yummy.
They look so lovely, the pie is so cute... too bad fresh is better. :)
Service berries aren't even very good fresh.
They are better as jam and pancakesyrup....if you use enough sugar... and lemon juice.
Elderberries, on the other hand, are divine. We planted 3 small shrubs on the hillside this year. They are just coming into bloom & the blooms themselves make an awesome topping for a cake if you dipp the whole head in water, shake them off, then dip them in sugar, & let them dry in the frig or some other coo place. Of course, if you pick the blossoms you won't ge the berries. You probably have a bunch of the bushes up your canyon.
We need to buy some nets before the birds consume ours.
