For the 27 years I've loved Wade he has consistantly spoken of his desire to join his dear sweet wife Betty who died of cancer 28 years ago, on February 18th. Wade passed away on February 18th. Love is powerful.
Roland and I wrote this obituary:
Charles Wade Smith, age 84, of Colorado Springs passed peacefully on Feb 18, 2011. He died on the same date, 28 years later, as his beloved wife Betty’s passing, leaving us all with the feeling that they were giving us a wink and a smile.
Wade was a lover and a fighter and recognized by his peers as a true hero. He left high school at seventeen years of age and fought in the Pacific Theater. He ultimately served as an officer in the US Army for twenty-two years. He was a two war combat veteran and was decorated many times for valor and meritorious service, was wounded three separate times and was awarded numerous other medals and qualification badges. In spite of the brutal experience of war, Wade was a lover and committed his life to serving others in and out of his church. He would tell everyone he loved them, even people he barely met.
And that love was returned ten fold. All who knew Wade loved Wade.
And that love was returned ten fold. All who knew Wade loved Wade.
Charles Wade Smith was born June 12, 1926 in S.L.C. Utah to Roland M. and Alene B. He demonstrated to his children and people around him that hard work and quiet determination were the keys to success by returning to college to finish his degree as an adult. He graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO with a bachelor of science in Business.
He is survived by three sons, Kent B (Mary) of Waldorf, Maryland; Michael B (Chris) of Colorado Springs; and Roland B (Robin) of Colorado Springs. He has two cherished daughters Christine Bickmore of Colorado Springs and Dorene (Chad) Calvert of Denver. He is adored by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Aunt Robin - Thank you for posting this. I'm wondering if you know the date that the 4th picture was taken, the one of Grandpa as a young man in the suit? Also, the baby picture, how old was he there?
Thanks, Kimberly
I'm sorry for your loss. He sounds like a truly remarkable man. I'm glad that he is finally with his dear wife. I'm sure that reunion was glorious.
This was beautiful! Wade will be missed.
Thank you for writing this and putting up pics, I copied a bunch to write a post on our blog about C. Wade and Calvin Wade.
Kimberly - the 4th picture was form 1946 and he was 2 years old in the baby picture. See you soon!
This was such a great post.
Grandma told me that Wade had a thing about greeting cards: if it wasn't a Hallmark, it wasn't up to snuff. That made me laugh.
I hope all goes well this coming week.
I am glad I knew Wade and especially glad that I've known him better through the stories that you and Roland have told. He was a great man.
What a remarkable man. I loved reading this, and it made me cry. He was such a lover. I love each and every picture, what a great family!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you this week. xoxoxoxox
He was a man who leaves an impact on those who are lucky enough to be able to talk with him, even only once.
Loved reading this post and seeing the pictures. Wonderful tribute and great to read on a National Holiday. Hope you are doing well.
I feel privileged that I got to read that this morning. Thanks for sharing him with us. Hugs to your family, Robin!
I considered Wade family from the first moment I met him--in Rexburg, before you and Roland were married. He was kind and thoughtful, soft spoken, and very much the gentleman who would not talk about himself without extreme coaxing. He was more interested in hearing others' stories and those stories were always received with sinceere interest and compliments. Over the years I came to know him as an optimistic, affectionate and very loving man. I am so glad I was able to see and visit with him last June with noah. I love and will miss him.
So very grateful for this blog...thank you for the beautiful post. We have a sweet love for Wade through all the wonderful stories you shared through the years. Please express our special love and concern to Roland!
We love and miss you both!
